When you perform a word search, the search is carried out simultaneously in all
classifications

This function enables you to search for words, expressions or exact phrases within the actual text of a document. Boolean and proximity search operators, phrase searching, nesting and stemming can be used in this search field.

Proximity Search Operators
The following proximity search operators can be used with words, exact phrases and nested Boolean queries.
NEARN |
|
Returns documents in which the first term is within N words of the second term. By default N is 5 words. |
|

Example: Smuggling NEAR3 tobacco |
|
|
This case searches for the term smuggling within 3 words of tobacco. |
|
|
|
DNEARN |
|
Returns documents in which the first term is within N words of the second term and in the indicated order. |
|
|
Example: cinnamon DNEAR4 cocoa |
|
|
This case searches for the term cinnamon within 4 words of cocoa and in the specified order. |

|
|
BEFORE |
|
Returns documents in which the first term comes before the second term |
|
|
Example: railway BEFORE locomotives |

|
|
AFTER |
|
Returns documents in which the first term comes after the second term |
|
|
Example: form AFTER customs |
Wildcards
The following wildcards are available to replace one or many characters within a word. The asterisk (*) is used to replace zero, one or more characters. The question mark (?) is used to replace one character.
Examples:
labo?r
will retrieve documents containing the term labour or labor
engin*
will retrieve documents containing the terms engine or engineering or engineered, etc.
Stemming
Stemming is automatically applied by the search engine and allows for the retrieval of words that have a common stem.
Examples:
Fish
will retrieve fish, fisher, fishing etc. It is not necessary to write "fish" OR "fisher" OR "fishing".
Phrases
Exact phrases can be searched for by using quotation marks (" ").
Examples:
"tariff schedules"
will retrieve documents containing the exact term tariff schedules
Note: The application will automatically search for all documents containing the terms tariff and schedules if no quotation marks are used.
